Cloud Servers & Cloud Hosting

Servers that scale. Servers that are affordable.

Cloud servers offer you the ability to build, deploy, and scale computing resources and applications quickly, while providing the flexibility to move and manage mission-critical workloads into the Cloud.

Cloud servers work like physical servers, but their function and application are used differently. Many businesses are choosing to deploy or “spin-up” cloud servers due to various advantages such as:

  • Economics – Cloud servers are more efficient than traditional dedicated servers, offering more resources and speed at decreased costs. Cloud servers also offer faster integration into existing IT resources and workflow, expediting time-to-live (and time-to-market).
  • Stability / cost ratio performance – Cloud servers do not suffer from typical server hardware problems while having all the benefits of cloud computing: stability, speed, security, etc.
  • Scaling and contracting – Cloud servers can be scaled and decommissioned with minimal effort. Provisioning additional upgrades such as CPU, memory, and disk space, fast and elastic.
  • Configuration flexibility – Cloud servers complete with root access give you the freedom to modify all server software to your exact requirements, even down to the parts of the operating system not always possible with other types of virtualized/virtual server solutions.
  • Stability and security – Each cloud server uses its own dedicated and isolated resource pool, meaning that it is protected from resource hogging or overload from other resources residing on the same platform. Stability is pretty much always guaranteed.

Cloud servers vs. virtual servers.

The definitions of ‘cloud servers’ and ‘virtual servers’ are sometimes intertwined or misunderstood. Essentially, cloud servers are virtual servers that are run and managed within a cloud computing environment on hosted infrastructure. This is why cloud servers are often referred to as virtual dedicated servers (or VDS).

While every cloud server is a virtual dedicated server, it does not necessarily work the other way around. A VDS can only run on a single traditional hardware server and can suffer from a single point of failure when its ‘parent’ hardware fails.

Cloud servers run as software-independent units or ‘containers,’ meaning that a cloud server contains all of the software it needs to run itself and does not depend on any centrally-installed software or OS. Cloud servers are ultimately more resourceful than virtual servers, being able to better handle situations such as additional spikes in traffic and greater redundancy in the event of failure.
