Conficker stirs and begins scamming

Tom Wanat - Friday, April 10, 2009
Everyone wondered when it would happen, and it appears the widespread conficker virus has started updating itself in an attempt to make money for its shady creators. Articles in today's New York Times and Washington Post give the lowdown from industry experts.

Now many infected systems are trying to scam users with a pop-up window named "Spyware Protect 2009", as shown in this image.

For $49.95, the software offers to remove itself. It won't, but it will take your credit card information.

There are still many ways to detect whether your system is actually infected, including this free Web-based scanner from Microsoft.
